Introduction to "Those girly games" Female protagonists in games
70A day at the video game store...
So I go with a friend of mine to a video game store to browse around the new arrivals To my delight I discover that P3Portable is out, even if I can't afford it yet. By now I had added the Persona series to my list of favorite RPGs (although nothing can beat Tales and Lunar in my book).
He, who know nothing about my type of RPG games, takes it from my hands and looks at it. He reads the back and examines the designs and looks pleased at it. He hands it back and says, "Well, this is a good year for girls, isn't it?
I frown a bit, "Huh? What do you mean?"
"Well, first Final Fantasy 13 and now this. Seems like girls are finally getting their own games."
Now, such a comment didn't make me mad nor offended me, but I admit I said a bit loudly: "Dude, Samus is a girl!"
Which prompted a list of games I own where the main character is female. Some of them who he was supposed to know. And none of them were those little girl games where they cook, dress up or play babysitter.
He looked a bit shocked at my outburst and I apologized since I wasn't really angry. We resolved the issue buying ice cream and playing cards. Still, there was the matter at hand of forgotten heroines.
Now, when it comes to games and me, all I care is for a good story and great characters. I tend not to go out looking for a certain gender or race, for example, when picking a game. If I look for anything is not a pansy, shallow, whining protagonist who will make me want to punch him or her in the mouth every time he or she talks. I'm a simple girl with simple desires.
That being said, I don't think a story needs to follow a male character for it to be good. A good story can be found in any gender, race or sexuality.
I have actually heard people complaining about games and gender. Like any game with a girl protagonist is going to be bad. Plenty of games with male protagonists suck while others are awesome. Sucking is not a gender specific situation. Same goes with empathy and likability for the main character.
I hate that idea; it's not like every male out there is incapable of sympathizing with a female. And don't bring me the porn excuse, because for every picture you give me I'll give you a fanfic with objectified male characters. Girls can be perverts too, most of my female friends are. Fanservice goes both ways.
Finally, these pieces I'm planning are not me grabbing the tiniest violin in the world and crying over the lack of female protagonists. Yes, there are more male than females so far, but I have noticed that in recent years more and more games with female protagonists have been made. True, some of them are way too sexualized or aren't that good, but those are issues I'll address as the games brings them up. Not all games are like that.
Unlike other minorities, female protagonists are starting to pop out and take charge, which is good as long as it is organic. My objective with this series is to shed some light over the forgotten heroines and the ones to come, let them be good or bad, and see how much these games have and haven't changed from

I agree with good story and gameplay being the main draws, but there are some games out there that shine with a female protaganist. Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy X-2, and even Princess Peach all have a fun, serious, or interesting side that wouldn't portray well with male characters. Good post.
